Every young child knows that there are things in this world to be scared of, most can tell you that in case of fire, you should stop, drop, and roll. But, do they know how to prepare in case of an Earthquake? Recent headlines show that they are a deadly reality; and can strike, even where they are least expected. Earthquake Emergency WaterInclude enough food and water to support your family from 3 to 5 days. Each individual should be provided at least a gallon of water per day. This does not have to be purchased; it can be run into appropriate containers, from the tap, and stored. Foods included should be ready to eat, non perishable, whole foods. Including canned dairy, like evaporated milk, is a great way to insure a balanced diet in the case of children. If there are family pets, include a three to five day supply of food and water for them as well.

It is also essential to be prepared to meet other bodily needs, like sanitation and rest. Include in your preparations a first aid kit, this can either be purchased in a commercial unit, or can be assembled from the regular first aid preparations in your home. You should also include a bucket to be used as a toilet, toilet paper, Kleenex, feminine hygiene products, and soap. Try to include at least one set of clothing for each family member, which would be appropriate to multiple weather conditions. Also, the kit should include an appropriate number of blankets or sleeping bags for the size of your household.

It is recommended that this light contain friction cells, or a wind up device for power, but it can be battery operated. These same recommendations apply to am/fm radios, one of which should be included in your kit to insure that you are able to receive news updates which are extremely important in case of emergency. Include kitchen essentials like a can opener, knife, paper cups and plates and disposable silverware. Matches can also be included at this time. Depending on your climate, having an alternate heating source may be appropriate.

Using a water tight bag, or more securely a small safe, include in your kit copies basic identification, and important documentation. Forms of identification might include passports, birth certificates, social security cards, marriage licenses, and immunization records. Also include copies of any insurance policies, bank accounts or stock portfolios, titles, contracts, deeds, and household valuable inventories. These will be essential to claiming losses, and acquiring new identification.

Finally, gather any specialty items for your survival kit that are necessary for your family. This might include spare eyeglasses or contacts, special medications, diapers, etc. Include anything which is a need specific to those you are preparing to care for.

After filling a container with the appropriate supplies, place your kit in a location where it could be easily accessed by family members in case of an emergency.
